The Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery Test (YYIRT) is a fitness test used to measure an individual's aerobic capacity and endurance performance. It involves repeated intervals of high-intensity running with brief periods of active recovery.
Test Procedure
Here are the steps on how to perform the test:
- Setup: The test requires a flat, 20-meter course with cones set up at each end. Markers are placed at 2.5, 5, and 7.5 meters from the start line. A music player or beep system is used to signal the start and end of each interval.
- Warm-up: Perform a 5-10 minute warm-up of light cardio and dynamic stretching exercises.
- Start the test: The test starts at a speed of 10 km/hour (Level 1). Run back and forth between the markers until the beep sounds, which indicates the end of the interval. Walk or jog for active recovery during the 5-second break.
- Increase the speed: After each interval, the speed increases by 0.5 km/hour (Level 2). Continue to run back and forth between the markers until the beep sounds, and walk or jog for active recovery during the 5-second break.
- End the test: The test ends when the participant can no longer keep up with the pace or reaches the maximum level (Level 23). Record the level and the distance covered.
The YYIRT has been shown to be a valid and reliable test of aerobic capacity and endurance performance. It is commonly used in team sports, such as soccer and basketball, to evaluate an athlete's fitness level and monitor progress over time.
