Connecting Science to Sport Through Sport Information. Sport is part of the social life and is realised in many forms. It has become an important part of the information system next to politics, economics and culture. This become evident in various publications, from newspaper up to TV. Sport as part of human life constantly produces information which is relayed to others and documented. Sport Has to be viewed as a generator of information.
Sport information or information science and on the other side a theory field of sport science. Sport information as a theory field has developed quite rapidly in recent years due to the huge amount of information on sport in its different aspects. The process of receiving, storing, and retrieving information requires that strategies and models of information science are designed in regard to sport; this task is achieved by a sport-related information science.
Documentation plays an important role in this process, considering different dimensions of data such as documents, literature, and audio-visual material. Information science itself is an integrative science consisting of parts of traditional sciences like linguistics, politics, psychology, sociology, and technology; these aspects are also relevant for sport information science, thus requiring a high degree of integrative thinking within sport information.
